The work of the Drug Policy Task Force has concluded. The Task Force met during two different periods from August 2009 to October 2013. There was a seven-month hiatus between the two work periods described below. The Task Force may be reinstated, if additional drug sentencing or policy topics arise in the future.
WORK PERIOD ONE. The Drug Policy Task Force was created by the CCJJ pursuant to Senate Bill 2009-286 to address drug sentencing and treatment issues in Colorado. Additionally, in May 2009, the Governor and Attorney General submitted this letter to the Commission regarding specific areas of focus for sentencing reform that were also assigned to this Task Force. These mandates were addressed between August 2009 and November 2012.
WORK PERIOD TWO. Subsequently, Senate Bill 2013-283 directed the Commission, via the Drug Policy Task Force, to develop recommendations necessary to conform criminal laws to Section 16 (Personal Use and Regulation of Marijuana) of Article XVIII of the State Constitution. A charter specific to this mandate was approved by the Commission on July 10, 2013 to guide the work of the task force. This mandate was addressed between July 2013 and October 2013.
